Eagle Harbor Superfund site, etching, 5 × 6 inch plate

Making art is how I make sense of where and how I live, what it means in this culture, and how I think about what matters. My earliest and most enduring memories are of places I have loved. In my work as an artist, I return—again and again—to the question of what places mean. To me, to us; across history, in this moment.

Representing the landscapes of my daily life—clear cuts, housing developments, the Pacific Northwest wilderness—gives me a way to explore the oldest questions about the nature of the sacred and the profane. Represented landscapes of the American West in particular have deep associations with notions of manifest destiny and a certain strain of romanticism; I use the language of these traditions to present a clear-eyed view of where I live in all of its complexity.

I work primarily en plein air. For me, it’s an escape from language into the delight of visual and formal logic. Almost all of the work was made in Kitsap County in Washington state, where I have made my home, raised a family, and set down roots. I love this place and communities I am part of here—and my work is both a love letter and a reminder that we can choose how we change the places we inhabit.
